READ FOR FILTH: SUMMER BOOK CLUB
Summer is refusing to arrive in Chicago, but we're ignoring these nasty, cold, rainy days ... and picking our summer reads ANY DAMNED WAY.
Being part of our Book Club (Read for Filth: A Book Club for Heauxs) is super easy. We give you a dang month to read a book. That's like so much time to read you guys. We know you'll be busy throwing tomatoes at the White House and building an igloo, but you gotta rest some time. Our theme this summer is MAGIC. I mean I guess? We don't really do themes, but when I saw what we had done I was like OH SHIT LOOK: MAGIC.
June is LGBTQIA+ PRIDE Month, so we picked The House of Impossible Beauties by Joseph Cassara. It follows a group of gay and trans club kids as they navigate the wild wild world of New York City in the 80s and 90s. The book was inspired by the real life House of Xtravaganza ... which was immortalized in the fabulous documentary Paris Is Burning.
OMG. AND. IF. you have not seen Paris Is Burning, get your life right. It's on Netflix. Basically what I'm saying is JUNE is QUEER AF, and we're gonna further your LGBTQIA education, so get ready. Yes, girl. LEARN SOMETHING.
We love a big gigantic epic read in the summer. We especially love an epic read you might have missed ... one you really meant to read but never managed to get in front of your pretty little face. So we picked The Witching Hour by your girl Anne Rice. I know, right? SPOOKY. I mean, maybe. I haven't read it yet so who knows what we're in store for. The book follows FOUR centuries of witches all over the world through drama drama drama.
This pick is inspired by Adrienne's recent trip to New Orleans, where she saw Anne's house ... where parts of the book take place. WHAT. It's gonna be super fun, so prepare to be delighted. You know you need a coven this summer, so basically this book pick is your Christmas morning. So, you're welcome, nerds!
Everyone is talking about our August read: Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi. You know you gotta stay on top of new hot YA books, otherwise you won't know what these kids in the streets are talking about. We're basically forcing you to stay up with the news, dudes. This is Adeyemi's debut novel and is the beginning of what promises to be an epic new series. It's a refreshing new fantasy series influenced by Adeyemi's West African heritage. OMG. WHAT. A FANTASY NOVEL NOT WRITTEN BY A WHITE PERSON. Yeah, girl. I told you this was gonna be a magic summer of reading.
The rules of Book Club are pretty simple. READ THE BOOK. Try to finish by the end of the month. We'll have a little chat about each book for you to read through. Get your friends and family and enemies involved. You watch Drag Race, so you know READING IS FUNDAMENTAL. Order your summer reads NOW!
Get all three or one at a time ... but be sure to order from your favorite independent book store. Maybe from one of our favorites? We love Women & Children First. Volumes. and The Book Cellar. Maybe you have your own favorite independant bookstore. GREAT! Just don't order from the evil empire of Amazon. OR I'LL COME OVER AND LEAVE A HORSE HEAD IN YOUR BED. JK. I don't know where you live and I would never hurt an animal. I'll just leave a rotten watermelon on your doorstep.
WHY AREN'T YOU READING?
